Navigating Healthy Eating While Traveling

This weekend, I had the joy of flying back to the east coast to go wedding dress shopping with my friends and family. Planning a wedding is an exciting adventure filled with many choices and shopping for the perfect wedding dress is an experience for which I was most excited! I journeyed out of town to find my dream gown, and while I was thrilled, I quickly faced a challenge: maintaining my healthy eating habits. With every meal requiring a restaurant stop, I found myself torn between tasty options and health-conscious choices. This is something I have always struggled with and I was determined to commit to healthy choices this trip. Here’s how I managed to stay on track with my health goals while enjoying this unforgettable trip.

The Temptation of Travel

Traveling for wedding dress shopping offers a unique thrill. From exploring boutique shops to the excitement of wearing stunning gowns, the experience is exhilarating. For reference, I have been in seven weddings as a bridesmaid/MOH and I was SO excited it was my turn! However, dining out at every meal can be a challenge, especially when you're committed to a healthy lifestyle.

Upon arriving in Cincinnati, I was greeted with countless dining options: from pasta and pizza to burgers and fries. As I scanned each menu, I wrestled with the desire to indulge in something decadent and the need to stick to my health goals.

Understanding My Cravings

To navigate my cravings, I first took the time to examine what I truly wanted. I noticed that when hunger struck, I often gravitated toward comforting dishes like creamy pasta or rich desserts. While enjoying treats occasionally is part of a balanced lifestyle, I knew I needed to maintain my commitment to healthy eating or I was setting myself up for a weekend of stomach pain - and not from laughing.

I began to distinguish between genuine cravings and my body simply signaling hunger. For instance, if I longed for something creamy, I opted for healthier alternatives, such as a savory red sauce instead of a heavy white cream sauce. This small adjustment allowed me to satisfy my cravings without straying from my health goals.

Planning Ahead

Before I went to the restaurant, I researched the menu. I looked for items with ingredients I knew were good for me and found something "fun" about those ingredients - who doesn't love a good buffalo cauliflower dish?! This preparation made me feel committed to my choice.

I targeted meals that were easy to order at any restaurant. For example, salads topped with lean proteins, grain bowls featuring whole grains and veggies, and colorful vegetable stir-fries were my go-to. By having these options ready in my mind, I found it easier to resist less nutritious temptations.

Making Smart Choices

When it was time to order, I employed several strategies to guide my choices:

  1. Start with Water: I ordered a glass of water as soon as I sat down. Not only did this help quench my thirst, but it also curbed my appetite, making it easier to choose wisely.

  2. Share Plates: When dining with friends or family, I liked to suggest sharing a few dishes. This way, I enjoyed a variety of flavors without loading my plate with too much.

  3. Ask for Modifications: I wasn't hesitant about alterations to my meals - I noticed the Italian restaurant we went to night one had gluten free pasta substitutions, so I committed to only ordering options that allowed this modification.

  4. Listen to My Body: I focused on attending to my body's hunger signals. Rather than finishing everything on my plate just because it was there, I stopped when I felt satisfied. I listened to a podcast recently that recommended eating slower - fully chewing each bite and taking time between bites. This way, your brain has a way to catch up to the food you're eating and timely send signals that you're full.

Finding Balance

While I was dedicated to healthy eating, I also recognized that balance is essential. I allowed myself to indulge occasionally during my trip. For example, I enjoyed some chocolate covered pretzels the scouts were selling outside a restaurant. The key is moderation, and I aimed to relish the sweet moments without compromising my overall health plan.

Incorporating physical activity was equally important. Whether I was wandering between boutiques or walking to dinner, staying active helped me feel good about my dietary choices and kept my energy levels up.

Tips for Healthy Eating While Traveling

If you are planning your own wedding dress shopping trip or simply traveling for fun, here are tips to help maintain a healthy diet and enjoy your time away:

  • Research Restaurants: Before you arrive, look for restaurants that offer healthy options, such as salads, lean proteins, and whole grains.

  • Pack Snacks: Bring portable snacks like mixed nuts, fruits, or protein bars. These can provide healthy options when you feel hungry and help you resist temptation.

  • Stay Hydrated: Make it a point to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated aids in managing hunger and boosts energy levels. I have made it a point to start traveling with my hydrojug!

  • Be Mindful: Keep an eye on portion sizes and always tune into your body’s hunger and fullness signals - slow down your eating!

  • Enjoy the Experience: Remember, it’s perfectly fine to treat yourself occasionally. The goal is to achieve a healthy lifestyle while savoring the special moments of your trip.

Embracing the Journey

Traveling for wedding dress shopping was an unforgettable opportunity, filled with both excitement and culinary hurdles. By understanding my cravings, planning ahead, and making thoughtful choices, I successfully navigated the world of dining out without abandoning my health goals.

Ultimately, finding the right balance is essential. Embrace your journey, enjoy the culinary delights, and savor every moment of this special time in your life. Happy dress shopping!
